Fall isn’t about one big, heavy sweater. It’s about layers. A t-shirt under a sweater. A sweater over a sweater. Then your coat on top.

The secret is a thin sweater, and my favorite is from Banana Republic Factory. Here’s the one I’m buying in four colors, and exactly how I layer it.

The quick answer

Why a lightweight sweater is the key to fall layering

My one rule: layer thin, not thick.

  • No bulk. Thin knits stack smoothly. A chunky sweater under a coat just looks puffy.
  • It fits under everything. Coats, blazers, even another sweater.
  • It works for real fall weather. Cool mornings, warm afternoons. Take a layer off by lunch and you’re still dressed.

The Banana Republic Factory Forever Crew-Neck Sweater

This is a classic, lightweight crew-neck sweater with ribbed cuffs and hem. It’s simple in the best way, so it goes with everything. It has over 4,000 ratings, comes in sizes XXS to XXL, and it’s made just for Banana Republic Factory.

I got it in black and brown first. They’re my perfect basics. Brown is also one of the biggest colors of fall 2026, so it feels current, not boring.

Bright blue sweaters for fall 2026

Bright blues are having a moment. After years of quiet neutrals, fall 2026 is all about bold color, and blue is leading the way. Cobalt and bright blue showed up on the fall runways at Chanel, Bottega Veneta and Givenchy.

That’s why I’m getting this sweater in Deep Dive Blue. A bright blue sweater is the easiest way to try the trend. You don’t need a whole new wardrobe. Just one sweater.

How to wear a bright blue sweater

  • With brown: Blue and brown together is one of the prettiest pairings of the season. Try the blue sweater over the brown one.
  • With denim: Blue on blue looks fresh and easy.
  • With neutrals: Let it be the one pop of color with black, camel or cream.

A dark red sweater for fall: Bright Wine

My other color is Bright Wine, a rich dark red. Burgundy and wine shades are everywhere this fall. It’s a color that feels bold but still goes with all your neutrals. It looks especially good with black.

How I layer sweaters for fall

These are my three go-to formulas:

1. A white long sleeve under a sweater

My base layer is the Reformation Liam Long Sleeve in white. It’s the perfect white long sleeve. Wear it under your sweater and let a little peek out at the cuffs, hem or neckline. White under black or brown looks clean and polished.

2. A sweater on a sweater

Wear one sweater, then tie a second one around your waist with the sleeves knotted in front. It adds color and texture without any bulk on top. Plus, if it gets chilly, you have an extra layer ready to go. This is where having a few colors pays off: Bright Wine on top with brown tied at the waist, or Deep Dive Blue with black.

3. A sweater under your fall coat

Because it’s thin, this sweater slides right under a coat with no bunching. Add your white long sleeve underneath and you have three layers that still look sleek.

Here’s exactly what I’m wearing: the brown sweater over my white long sleeve, with light-wash jeans, a belt and black loafers.

What color sweater is in style for fall 2026?

Bright and cobalt blue, brown, and deep wine reds are three of the big colors this fall. Black is always a safe basic.
