Plum is my favorite color for fall. It’s darker than purple and softer than black. It goes with almost everything already in your closet. If you want to wear more color but don’t love bright shades, plum clothes are the easiest place to start.
Here are the plum pieces I’m buying this season, and how I’m wearing them.
1. Barbara Katz Taffeta Balloon Pants in Plum
I’m starting strong with an item that is very “in” right now but still timeless: taffeta pants in plum. These are from Barbara Katz. I love that it’s a lesser-known brand, so you won’t see everyone else in the same pants. My favorite part is that you can turn them into balloon pants. I think they are so chic. Taffeta has a little sheen and holds its shape, so the pants feel dressed up even with a simple sweater.
Wear them with a fitted plum sweater for a full plum outfit, or with a cream knit and loafers.

2. Cropped Plum Pants (If Balloon Isn’t Your Thing)
Not into the balloon look? These plum pants from Reformation are insane. The Olina Cropped Pant has a relaxed fit, a drawstring waist, and a cropped length that shows off your shoes. The color is called Dark Purple, but it reads as a deep, rich plum. They’re $198. If your size is sold out, join the waitlist. They’re worth it.
They look great with ballet flats, slingbacks, or ankle boots.

3. A Plum Sweater
A plum sweater is a must-have. It’s easy to layer and an easy way to add color to your look. Gap has the best sweaters at affordable prices, so you can stock up on a few colors.
I love the CashSoft Crew Sweater in Purple Bordeaux. It’s soft, it’s easy to wash, and it comes in regular, tall, and petite. It’s $69.95, and when I wrote this it was 40% off.

4. The Dragon Diffusion Bag in Plum
If you only buy one plum piece this fall, make it a plum bag. This one from Dragon Diffusion is WOW! I love this color for a bag. It’s real leather and it costs under $500. That’s a really good price for a leather bag, and it will last for years, so think of it as an investment. A plum purse adds color to any outfit without trying too hard. It looks great with black, cream, camel, and denim.
Wear it with an all-black outfit and let the bag be the star.

What Colors Go With Plum?
Plum is easy to pair. These are my go-tos:
- Cream or ivory: the softest, most polished look
- Camel and chocolate brown: warm and very fall
- Grey: cool and calm, great for work
- Olive or sage green: unexpected but so pretty
- Pink: for a bold, fun look
- More plum: a plum sweater with plum pants is an instant outfit
What to Wear With Plum Pants
Keep the rest simple and let the pants be the star. Try a cream sweater, a camel coat, and brown loafers or boots. For a night out, add a black top and gold jewelry.
